Anchorage (officially called the Municipality of Anchorage) is a unified home rule municipality in the southcentral part of the State of Alaska. With an estimated 300,950 residents in 2013, it is Alaska’s most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state’s total population.
In 1968, oil was discovered in Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Slope; a 1969 oil lease sale brought billions of dollars to the state deacent. In 1974, construction began on theTrans-Alaska Pipeline System. The pipeline was completed in 1977 at a cost of more than $8 billion.
